Location: Victoria, BC. Downtown.

Lately the city has added more than 400 bike parking spaces to the downtown core area served by metered parking.

Hundreds of parking meters were converted to pay by space systems that use centralized kiosks and much smaller posts than the old bulbous headed meters that used to support coin operated systems.

Some cyclists have been choked at the loss of informal bike parking, though the meter posts were most often too close to the curb edge, creating problems for both cyclists and vehicle passengers. Placement of bike racks - and with better design features exhibited by better racks, distances them a little further from the street to reduce conflicts or damage potential.

Capital costs of the conversion will take a couple of years to pay off, but the city is rescuring nearly a half million dollars (Canadian) in lost revenue and property damage associated with the old meters. Once the new system is paid off, some of the proceeds from the city's parking revenue stream will go to supporting facilities to support alternative transportation, including more bike racks.

The potential of several hundred thousands of dollars invested into bike racks, let alone the other facility needs the city has for cycling infrastructure, provides so much more value than holding on to the imperfect, if convienent, old parking meter posts.

K's bike - the 'Hunter 1.0'

Made by 'Giant,' this is my 18 speed touring bike. It is my most valued possession.

I don't have my Chinese driver's licence yet, so I use my bike to go everywhere. I like riding my bike, because it frees me from being dependent on our driver. He's a great guy, and I would trust him with my life, but... I like the freedom my bike offers. I don't have to pantomime my desire to go somewhere; I can actually see -- experience! -- the country I am living in; and there are no end-of-the-day reports to 'the boss' about where I have been.

Now, if only I could have been somewhere worth reporting.

Still, I traipse through small, dirty, charming villages that have bustling markets; I cut through small farm paths and see people tending to the fresh vegetables growing in the ditches and the fields; and I often go where no white-devil would normally go.

And all the way, I am taking positions with my GPS and pictures with my camera so that I can share my experience with you.

I suspect I look pretty suspicious.

(I suppose there is still the possibility for filing end-of-day-reports on my whereabouts to 'the boss': she could audit my GPS track-log. Must do something about that...)
